REDBEAM RFID CASE STUDY

Energy Company Saves Millions on Training Efficiency and Compliance

use-case-personnel-tracking-case-study-1

Every year, a training facility at a large energy company handles education and authorization requirements for more than 18,000 new workers before they can be approved for work.

It’s imperative that the training program, which has an estimated annual cost of more than $30 million, runs as efficiently as possible.

When the company found that more than half of trainees’ time was spent idle or on non-value-added activities, it went searching for ways to speed up check-in processes and streamline training workflows – fast.

  • At check-in, admins use RedBeam to assign each trainee an RFID-enabled badge that’s associated with a unique employee ID.
  • Fixed RFID readers throughout the facility track employee badges as workers move around and attend training courses.
  • With the auto-generated badge location history, the company has an accurate record of each trainee’s real-time progress, which helps ensure they complete required training on time.
  • RedBeam RFID uses REST APIs to pass tracking data to the company’s business intelligence platform, which analyzes the information for additional opportunities to reduce idle time.
RedBeam’s RFID employee tracking solution has helped substantially reduce the time needed to check in new employees and eliminate the manual tasks involved with monitoring training activities.

Additionally, with better insights into how workers flow through the training process, the company has made significant progress in reducing non-value activities and shortening training cycles.

Together, these operational efficiency improvements have yielded multi-million dollar savings – and earned RedBeam a very satisfied customer.

RFID People Tracking FAQs

Is RFID the same as GPS tracking?

No, RFID is not the same as GPS tracking. Although both offer the ability to track and identify items, the technologies work differently and have different ideal uses.

RFID –

  • Uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track tags attached to items that pass near RFID readers.
  • Typically involves relatively short read ranges – although some device-and-tag combinations can work at distances of up to 100 feet or so.
  • Most often involves completely passive tag technology. Under ideal conditions, this means that tags can be used for up to 20 years – no batteries required.
  • Works well in applications like inventory management, access control, yard management, etc.
GPS –
  • Uses multiple satellite signals to calculate the precise locations of objects and people on a global scale.
  • Requires receivers to have a consistent source of power – such as batteries or a hard-wired connection – to constantly power its search for signals.
  • Has no fixed range as long as the receiver is able to access satellite signals.
  • Works well in applications like navigation and tracking vehicles, phones, and other items over long distances.
What types of businesses benefit the most from RFID personnel tracking?
RFID personnel tracking offers significant benefits to any organization for whom enhancing workforce management, safety, and efficiency are top concerns.  Here are just a few examples:

  • Healthcare facilities – Track patients, staff, and medical equipment use within hospitals to ensure patient safety, improve care response times, and streamline workflows.
  • Manufacturing and warehousing – Track workers’ movements to optimize productivity and increase safety around hazardous areas.
  • Retail – Analyze employee presence and customer movement around the sales floor to better understand shopping patterns and reduce shrink.
  • Event management – Track attendees, staff, and VIPs at large events to manage crowd control and personalize guest experiences.
  • Corporate workspaces – Monitor employee movements within offices to improve space utilization, restrict access to sensitive systems, and locate individuals in the event of an emergency.
  • Educational organizations – Track students and staff on campus to automate attendance recording, improve access control, and alert staff to emergencies or unusual activities.
  • Hospitality – Assess guest and staff movements at hotels, resorts and theme parks to streamline check-ins and provide better service.
How secure is the data collected by RedBeam RFID’s employee tracking software?
The data collected by our RFID employee tracking software is very secure.  To protect the integrity of your workforce data, we provide things like:
