Alleviate Luggage Struggles with a Modern Solution

Handling large volumes of luggage during peak travel times requires precision and speed.

Manual baggage processes too often lead to delayed bags, misplaced items, and slow resolution times – the types of issues that create bottlenecks and negative customer impressions.

Tag guest bags

  • At check-in, staff members attach luggage tags embedded with RFID inlays to guests bags.
  • If baggage IDs have not already been assigned to guests within the back end system, staff members may use Zebra handheld RFID readers to associate tags with passenger details on the spot.

REDBEAM RFID CASE STUDY

RFID Keeps Luggage Handlers Cruising Along

use-case-baggage-tracking-case-study
A global cruise line wanted to keep passengers better informed about where their luggage was located during its on-boarding and disembarking processes.

With a limited window of time to process thousands of pieces of luggage across both activities, they needed a solution that could provide an exceptional guest experience while also speeding up their baggage handling process.
  • Luggage handlers attach cruise line-branded luggage tags embedded with passive RFID inlays to customers’  bags at check-in.
  • Workers use Zebra handheld mobile RFID readers to associate the luggage  tag IDs with passengers’ information in the cruise line’s back-end system.
  • As luggage moves through the on-boarding process, Zebra fixed RFID readers track bags at each step, including –
    • luggage inspection,
    • luggage in quarantine,
    • luggage on boat,
    • luggage en route to room, and
    • luggage delivered.
  • RedBeam RFID sends REST API updates each time a bag is scanned for the first time at a location, pushing the latest bag location to the cruise line’s backend systems and its passenger app.
  • When it’s time to disembark, passengers check in their bags for departure, and the process moves in reverse.
  • Back on shore, luggage handlers use mobile RFID devices to locate luggage to specific areas within its large, customer baggage pick-up zone.
  • RedBeam RFID sends bag location information to the cruise line’s system, which lets departing passengers know where to pick up their bags.
RedBeam RFID has helped this cruise line provide a truly beneficial guest service while significantly reducing the manpower required for luggage handling and improving its processing speed.

Bag Tracking FAQs

What level of detail does RFID provide for bag tracking and locating?
The level of detail RFID is able to convey about bag tracking is determined by several factors, including the type of hardware and tags you use, as well as how many and where your fixed RFID readers are deployed.

Generally speaking, though, here are some helpful things to know:

  • RedBeam RFID uses RAIN RFID tag technology in our luggage tracking system.
  • RAIN RFID tags are passive, which means that they need a reader to “activate” their microchip into transmitting their tag ID back to the reader.
  • These ultra-high frequency (UHF) tags  have a read accuracy rate of 99–100%, even at a distance of around 30 feet.
  • Real-time bag tracking is accurate to within 15 feet or so throughout the luggage handling process.
  • The more readers you deploy along the routes luggage takes in your facilities, the more granular you can be in your tracking.
How does RedBeam RFID protect guests’ privacy?
To answer questions about RedBeam RFID and guests’ privacy, there are two main topics to address: 1) the solution itself, and 2) the nature of the data RFID tracking is able to convey. Let’s look at each of these.

RedBeam RFID Solution
We treat protecting your guests’ and your business’s data very seriously. To that end, our application includes things like:
  • Auth0 authentication and authorization – to prevent unauthorized data access; and
  • SOC 2 Type II certification – which we maintain with regular penetration testing and ongoing security scanning.
RFID Tracking Data
  • RFID tags typically store a limited amount of data – no more than 2 KB of data and usually around 256 bits of storage, or the equivalent of around six phone numbers.
  • To protect guests’ privacy, baggage tags typically contain little information beyond a unique tag ID.
  • Rather than encoding sensitive traveler details on the tags themselves, RedBeam enables tag IDs to be associated with specific guest details through your secure back-end system databases.
This combination of robust security measures and minimal data storage on RFID tags supports RedBeam RFID’s goal of safeguarding guest privacy while still delivering a meaningful baggage tracking solution.
Does using RFID to track bags require extensive staff training?
While there is a slight learning curve involved with RFID bag tracking, our customers tend to find that the benefits the technology offers – in terms of efficiency and accuracy – far outweigh any initial training effort.

Additionally, it’s important to remember that RedBeam RFID’s automation features actually reduce the need for manual intervention. This simplification of some aspects of baggage handling workflows offers all types of hospitality businesses an attractive productivity boost ROI.
