Avoid Costly Manual RFID Configuration Mistakes

Having to manually DIY your RFID reader setup is the last thing you want. Individually configuring, cataloging, and integrating hundreds of fixed readers is painstaking, tedious work.

It means long deployment lead times and inconsistent settings that increase operational risk and troubleshooting – and delays getting your business the tracking data it needs now.

RedBeam RFID makes it easy to set up and manage your readers:
  • Point a fixed reader to the RedBeam RFID cloud – the device will automatically self-report details on firmware, max number of antennas, IP address, and more.
  • Enter your antenna settings for things like power, cooldown, prefix, and port number.
  • Set time-out alerts to tell you if a reader unexpectedly goes offline.

How RedBeam RFID Fixed Reader Management Works

Set up your RedBeam cloud connection

Use Zebra’s fixed reader IoT management tool to establish the connection setting you want used by your readers during production.

Direct fixed RFID readers to check in with the RedBeam cloud upon activation.

Install readers & antennas

Physically install fixed readers and any antennas in your operational environment.

Power them on, and provide network access using ethernet, wireless, or cellular. Readers will self-report to the RedBeam cloud and provide the relevant device identification.

Task RedBeam to configure readers

From the RedBeam admin console, configure either individual settings (e.g., antenna-to-location settings, power settings) or mass settings (e.g., time-out values, tag prefixes).

As RFID readers check in, RedBeam will update their settings automatically.

Monitor RFID reader status

With readers now active in your operational environment, RedBeam will monitor both their tracking activity and operational status.

If a fixed reader goes offline, RedBeam will notify the admin user(s) of your tenant to look into the issue.

Use tracking data to make things happen

Once you determine which tag reads at a given location are significant, use RedBeam’s notification engine to set up workflows.

Some examples: send an email; push a REST API call to a back office system; activate a GPO (General Purpose Out) on the reader to trigger a light bar or alarm; update the item’s status in RedBeam RFID.

Gain better work in process visibility

No two production lines are the same: Varying materials, equipment layouts, and workflow speeds can all impact your RFID performance. RedBeam lets you configure RFID reader settings to match your exact manufacturing environment – and achieve your exact data capture goals.
  • Adapt to any environment – Fine-tune reader power and range to ensure accurate tracking across slow-moving assembly lines, high-speed processes, and everything in between.
  • Eliminate tracking blind spots – Customize RFID settings to capture every item you want and not the items you don’t – even in dense layouts or complex workflows.
  • Filter data for better insights – Set tag detection rules to separate WIP, raw materials, and finished goods, improving process transparency and decision-making.
  • Maximize operational efficiency – Optimize reporting using customized workflows to deliver real-time tracking without wasting energy on information you don’t need.

Get smarter about tracking inventory

From busy loading docks to dense storage areas and fast-moving store floors, retail operations include a range of environments – and each poses its own tracking challenges. RedBeam lets you customize fixed RFID reader settings to get the best performance in every location.
  • Right-size your field of view – Adjust read range and signal strength to capture tag IDs over wide areas, like warehouses, or narrow areas, like back-of-store corridors and product aisles.
  • Reduce errors in dense inventory areas – Prevent missed or duplicate reads by setting antenna settings to reduce signal overlap in dense areas.
  • Filter out noise for better accuracy – Set rules to read only the tags that matter, separating live inventory from fixed assets or external tags that pass by your readers.

Increase precision for healthy outcomes

Tracking essential medical equipment and supplies is an increasingly vital part of making patient care more efficient. With RedBeam RFID in your facility, staff can manage your reader settings to focus on the critical data you need and cut out counterproductive noise.
  • Capture the right data at the right time – Customize read frequency to monitor fast-moving, high-traffic areas like ERs and reduce scans in low-activity zones to prevent data overload.
  • Filter out irrelevant tags – Set tag detection rules to ignore external tags, ensuring your system focuses only on assets that matter to your facility.
  • Enhance safety & compliance – Optimize reader settings around sensitive items, like controlled substances, to ensure complete activity records for safety audits and regulatory reporting.
Quotation mark

The technical support at RedBeam is second to none with you very knowledgeable and friendly support staff. The software is simple to use and is a great value. The reporting and inventory control is outstanding, and I would recommend RedBeam products to anyone.

Fixed RFID Reader Management FAQs

Do I need to install servers locally to manage my fixed readers?

No – readers use built-in intelligence to reach out to the cloud. When paired with RedBeam RFID, they don’t require any local infrastructure. Simply connect the reader to  the Internet, and you’re good to go.

Do I need any specific firewall configuration or rules to support the readers?
In most cases, no, you do not need any specific firewall configuration or reader support rules. Think of it this way: Your fixed RFID readers are simply devices on your network, reaching out to our cloud application. The conversation is initiated outbound from the reader, which negates the need for you to ‘poke holes’ in your firewall to allow communication from a cloud server.
How do I configure the readers once they’re online?
To configure a reader that’s already online, select it from the RedBeam RFID portal. You can update any reader’s individual configurations for antennas, power levels, and cooldown, along with some additional advanced settings.  You can also use the portal to mass configure things like tag prefixes and check-in times.
Can I just send all of the tag reads collected by RedBeam RFID to my application or system?
Yes. RedBeam RFID can always be used as simple middleware, capturing tag read data for other systems. Use our notification engine to push specific tag reads to one of your back office systems, or use our API to collectively pull and share all tag reads at the same time.
Is there a limit on the number of RFID readers we can deploy or tags we can track?
No, RedBeam RFID can support as many readers and tags as you need. Through our use of the cloud and containerized deployment, our solution scales easily – for large and small deployments alike. Today we have customers with hundreds of thousands of tags and hundreds of RFID readers in one tenant.
What happens if I have multiple sites? Are all of my RFID readers together in one UI?
RedBeam RFID puts the choice in your hands: Manage all of your readers in a centralized UI, or use our multi-tenant architecture to separate your readers and data by site. Use the deployment option that works best for you.
How do the readers connect – is ethernet the only option?
Zebra’s current line of fixed RFID readers offer connection over ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular. Additionally, you also have the option to power your readers via PoE or a standard power supply.
