Learn more about RedBeam Inventory Tracking software

Can I use existing UPC barcodes or do I need to print new labels to track my inventory?

Yes, you can use existing UPC (Universal Product Code) barcodes to track your inventory. With RedBeam Inventory Tracking, there’s no need to print new labels.  Simply scan the UPC label, enter the item details, and track away.

Here are some additional details you may find helpful:

  • UPC codes generally have three components: 1) a manufacturer or company prefix; 2) a product number; and 3) a check digit.
    • The first set of 6–10 digits is the manufacturer’s identification number, which is assigned by GS1, the organization that sets and governs UPC standards.
    • The next set of five digits is the item number.  This is assigned internally by the manufacturer to identify the individual product (e.g., printer ink cartridge) or specific variant (e.g.,standard printer cartridge,  tri-color printer ink cartridge, dye-based printer ink cartridge, etc.) within its overall catalog.
    • The check digit is a single digit number at the end of the code that’s used by manufacturers to verify that the rest of the information in the UPC is correct.
  • The barcode itself does not contain manufacturer or product information. It only translates the UPC digits into machine-readable patterns to make them scannable.
  • Scanning the UPC label won’t necessarily tell you the manufacturer or product details either. You need access to a database containing that information in order to call it up by scanning the label.
  • With RedBeam Inventory Tracking running on your laptop or mobile device, you can scan the UPC to capture the ID number for that product, and enter the specific details you want associated with that number in your database.
  • Keep in mind that UPC labels aren’t serialized – which is to say, if you have 12 of the exact same type of printer cartridge, all 12 will have the same UPC code.
Do I need to use a mobile device to scan inventory in order to receive, issue, or adjust it?

No, you don’t need to use a mobile device for scanning inventory, although, when compared to manual data entry, it is more accurate and faster to do so.

With RedBeam Inventory Tracking, all you truly need is a PC for running the application and entering your data. This setup will still offer you more benefits than relying on outdated spreadsheets.

Do I need to integrate RedBeam Inventory Tracking with other back office systems?
While you can use RedBeam’s REST APIs to interface to other back office systems, you certainly do not need to.  RedBeam Inventory Tracking can always be used as a standalone ‘system of record’ to support your consumable inventory tracking needs.
Do I need IT staff to implement RedBeam Inventory Tracking?
Not necessarily – though if your IT staff needs or wants to be involved with deploying the application, they’re welcome to participate. RedBeam’s cloud-based inventory tracking software is a SaaS platform that requires no professional services. Our customers can confirm that it is incredibly easy to set up and use.
