Extend Asset Visibility Beyond Your Four Walls

Tracking inventory inside a warehouse is one thing. Finding a specific trailer, container, or piece of equipment across acres of outdoor space is another.

Manual location checks take time. And equipping every asset with its own active tracking device is expensive and complicated.

RedBeam offers a different approach: Use a vehicle-mounted RFID reader to associate GPS location data with tagged items – and automatically build a more current picture of where things are and how they move through your operation.

Cover more ground with RedBeam RFID:
  • Reduce manual searching and scanning by capturing inventory and asset locations as operational vehicles perform their normal daily tasks.
  • Maintain item visibility using cost-effective passive RFID tags on trailers, containers, equipment, and other outdoor assets.
  • Help teams find what they need faster by feeding captured GPS mapping data into backend business systems.

How RFID Outdoor Inventory Tracking Works

Tag your outdoor inventory

Apply passive UHF RFID tags to trailers, containers, equipment, or other outdoor assets. Rugged tag options support outdoor applications, while passive RFID makes it cost-effective to track large numbers of items without individual GPS devices.

Equip your yard vehicles
Mount antennas and a GPS- and cellular-enabled RFID reader, such as the Zebra FXR90, onto a yard truck, forklift, or other utility vehicle already used for daily outdoor tasks.

Capture locations automatically
As the vehicle makes its rounds, the reader detects tagged items. RedBeam associates GPS location data with each read – without any interaction on the operator’s part.

Find the inventory or assets you need
Look up any tagged item in the RedBeam app to see its captured location. From a mobile device, open the location in Google Maps to navigate directly to it.

Make trailers and containers easier to find

Maintain better visibility across busy yards as trailers and containers move between gates, staging areas, and docks. RedBeam RFID replaces disruptive manual scanning with location data captured automatically during normal operations.
  • See where items were last detected to narrow the search across large yards.
  • Capture both planned and unassigned asset movements to help physical locations stay aligned with system records.
  • Feed GPS coordinates and entry/exit events into existing TMS (transportation management system) or YMS (yard management system) platforms.

Know where equipment is across the job site

Keep track of high-value assets spread across outdoor yards and construction zones. With location data captured every time a vehicle passes a tagged asset, RedBeam RFID helps protect your investment in the items crews rely on most.
  • Locate heavy equipment and other items throughout large, constantly changing worksites.
  • Identify idle or underused tools faster to help reduce unnecessary rentals and redundant purchases.
  • Capture location data during normal site activity without adding manual scans to crews’ daily workloads.

RFID Outdoor Tracking FAQs

Q: Can RFID reliably track inventory stored outdoors or across a large yard?
A: Yes. RFID can reliably track inventory across outdoor yards when the system is designed for the operating environment. RedBeam combines rugged passive UHF RFID tags with vehicle-mounted readers and GPS mapping to capture location data as tagged items are detected. Tag selection, antenna placement, vehicle routes, and other site conditions can affect performance, so RedBeam configures each deployment around the assets, environment, and level of location accuracy required.
Q: How do I choose RFID tags for outdoor applications?
A: RedBeam uses passive UHF RFID tags, with tag selection based on the inventory or assets you want to track and your specific operating environment. Rugged options are available for trailers, containers, metal equipment, and other outdoor assets. Your choice of tags and antennas directly impacts read reliability and location accuracy, so RedBeam can help select the right options for your particular needs.
Q: How accurate is RedBeam RFID location tracking?

A: When the components are tuned correctly, RedBeam RFID can determine GPS coordinates within approximately 10 feet.

The longer, more complete answer is that location accuracy depends on a number of factors, from vehicle speed to the tags and antennas used.

RedBeam RFID’s locationing algorithm accounts for the direction of the moving reader, whether tags are read from the left or right, and when the tag is read most strongly to help determine asset location as accurately as possible.

Q: Does GPS mapping require cellular service?
A: Yes. The GPS-enabled RFID reader requires a cellular SIM card for connectivity. Supported readers are unlocked and can work with most cellular providers.
Q: What hardware do I need?

A: Outdoor applications require hardware that can withstand changing temperatures, moisture, dust, and other environmental conditions.

RedBeam RFID was specifically built to pair with devices like Zebra’s ultra-rugged FXR90 fixed RFID reader. An industrial-grade device, the FXR90 has IP65/67 sealing, an expanded operating temperature range, and 5G, GPS, and private cellular connectivity.

We’re happy to help you select the right hardware for your environment.

Q: Can RedBeam RFID integrate with our existing systems?
A: Yes. RedBeam can feed time-stamped GPS coordinates and entry/exit events into TMS, YMS, or ERP platforms through REST APIs or MQTT streaming, helping location data move across your existing operation.
